Your First Apartment: What To Buy First

Buy these items to prepare for your first apartment.

Moving into your first apartment is a meaningful milestone that you should celebrate. Self-sufficiency and independence are things that most adults strive to achieve. A sense of freedom comes with moving into your first apartment. In addition, it’s exciting to personalize an apartment with décor and furniture. Every first-time renter asks the question, “What do I buy?” Here are some tips about what to buy first when moving into your first apartment.

The Bedroom Necessities for Your First Apartment

Your bedroom should be as cozy as possible. It’s where you can look forward to winding down after a long day of work. Some bedroom essentials should include:

  1. A Mattress and Bedding: Buying a mattress should be your #1 priority. We recommend buying two sets of bedding, including fitted sheets, pillows and pillowcases, and a warm blanket.
  2. A Bed Frame: Bed frames come at a cost, but they’re worth the expense. It’s best not to unnecessarily expose your mattress to dust and debris, making it harder to clean or flare up your allergies. In addition, a bed frame ensures a bed’s longevity. The appropriate bed frame and box spring can also provide under-bed storage if you need it.
  3. Clothing Storage: You might only need a closet if you’re a minimalist. However, a dresser benefits anyone who has a lot of clothes. You can also use a dresser to store miscellaneous things and help the bedroom appear more structured.
  4. Curtains: You should cover any window in your bedroom for privacy purposes. Curtains also help block ambient light from outside to ensure that you sleep better.

Bathroom Requirements

After a long day of hauling items, a shower is relaxing. The first things that you should buy for your apartment are:

  • Toilet Paper
  • Soap
  • Hand Towels
  • Towels
  • Shower Curtain
  • Bath Mat
  • Toilet Plunger
  • Toothpaste
  • Shampoo
  • Facial Cleanser

The list could go on forever, but in short, have whatever you use during your daily showering or bathing routine readily accessible.

Kitchen Essentials

It takes more than a day to accrue everything you’ll need for your kitchen. You don’t need to buy everything at once. You’ll most likely want to order out after a long move-in day. However, a few items are necessary, such as:

  1. Dishware: Utensils, glasses, cutlery, and a mug or two are enough items to start. Paper towels, sponges, and dish detergent are necessary for a first apartment.
  2. Kitchenware: If you like to cook, you’ll need a cutting board, a nice set of knives, a few non-stick frying plans, and some pots to make quick dishes.
  3. Trash/Recycling: You don’t want to be without a trash can or recycling bin during move-in day. Unpacking is frustrating without being able to discard debris or recycle boxes.
  4. Appliances:  If you’re a coffee drinker or prefer microwaved meals, buying a device or two can be helpful.

Living Room Needs/Cleaning Products

You can decorate a living room in countless ways. It all depends on your taste. However, every living room needs seating. You want to have a comfortable place for your guest to sit. You’ll also need cleaning products such as a broom and dustpan, toilet bowl cleaner, surface disinfector, a mop, and sponges.

Ideally, before your big move, you’ll want to progressively accumulate the things you need so as not to feel overwhelmed.
