Moving in With a Partner: How to Live In One Apartment

Moving in with a partner can be tricky, so be sure to remember these tips for a smooth experience!

Moving in with your boyfriend, girlfriend, or significant other is a big decision and should be a step taken after much consideration. While moving together comes with many benefits like spending more time together and splitting your expenses, it may also come with unexpected obstacles. If you are ready to move in with a partner at your Beechtree Apartments home, remember the following tips to ensure a smooth transition into one comfortable household.

Discuss Money

Sit down and discuss your current expenses, income, how you both save money and your potential budget for a new place. Discuss your planned shared expenses beyond rent. Depending on your income, a 50/50 split may not always be the fairest way to divide costs.

Consider Pet Ownership

Does one of you currently own a pet? Do you want pets in the future? Does anyone have allergies? If you plan on getting a pet together or moving in with your partner and their pet, consider how that impacts things. Consider pet deposits, vet bills, and daily needs for your pet. Discuss pet care, too, including whether pets are allowed on furniture, feeding rules, and who cleans up the pet’s mess.

Communicate No Matter What

Communication is essential between all kinds of roommates. When moving in with a partner, encourage each other to express concerns about the apartment or your lifestyle. If someone needs quiet time when working, discuss this. If another person wants space and time to do their morning workout, discuss this too so no one is surprised by each other’s routines or preferences.

Consider Chore Assignments

Living together means you are both responsible for maintaining and cleaning your apartment home. You can’t assume one person will do a task unless assigned. This is why it’s best to discuss your chore assignments, and who will do what. You may decide that one person prefers to do the dishes. Or, you may decide that alternating chores works best. Find what works for you to create a harmonious living environment.

Create a Shared Calendar

When moving in with your partner, knowing where they are may be helpful when they are out of the apartment. If you need to contact them regarding pet care, errands, or bill payments, you should be able to. Create a shared calendar with your partner to check each other’s schedules when needed. You can also add reminders for shared bills, work-from-home schedules, parties, and any upcoming joint activities when sharing a calendar.

Take Inventory When Moving

When moving in with a partner, you are both bringing your own collection of things together into one new home. You will likely have overlap across things in the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. Go through everyone’s items and decide what to donate, keep, sell, or throw away. You may keep some things in storage if you don’t want to get rid of them but have no use for duplicate items in your apartment. Taking stock of your items can help ensure your apartment doesn’t feel cluttered and confined.
