When moving we often find we have more belongings than we do space. Here are some storage ideas for small apartment spaces.

A part of life for many of us is accumulating belongings; decorations, clothes, gadgets, furniture. When moving we often find we have more belongings than we do space. A hard decision to make is what to keep and what to get rid of but here are some storage ideas for small apartment spaces.

Multifunctional Furniture

You’ll obviously need furniture for your apartment, so why not make it double as something else. There are a number of pieces that can be used as seating but also as storage. Ottomans or lidded coffee tables as well as benches with hidden compartments under the seat cushions. There is always the option of collapsable furniture as well.

Coat Closets

Generally, most apartments have a small coat closet with a very high shelf and a pole for jackets. Use this space to add a shelving unit that will allow more storage space than stacking bins on top of one another. This also allows for more convenient access to your stored belongings.

Cabinet Organizers

Cabinets come with shelves but it never seems to be enough. Adding organizers in cabinets can significantly increase shelf space. Dual-tier organizes can essentially double the space in your cabinets for things like glasses and dishes. Sliding baskets under sinks can increase the usable space in that hard-to-use area.

Under-the-Bed Storage

Under the bed is the perfect place for storage bins! Either smaller storage bins with the bed as is or add furniture risers to create extra room for standard-size storage bins. This is a great place to store seasonal clothes, extra sheets, even alternating bathroom decor or holiday decorations. If you’re on the market for a new bed, there are options for beds with dresser drawers underneath, potentially eliminating the need for a chest of drawers.

Bedroom Closet Organizers

This can go one of two ways; you can be lucky enough to have a large closet with room for your wardrobe in which case you can add some storage and make the most of the space. If you’re not one of the lucky ones, there are options for a freestanding wardrobe. Depending on the size, adding cubby organizers can create additional storage for sheets, bedding, and other miscellaneous belongings.

Above Cabinet Storage

There is usually a large space between the ceiling and the top of kitchen cabinets. Don’t let this be wasted space! This is a great space for appliances you don’t normally use, cookbooks, baskets that store pans or pots. In addition to this, it is a good idea to invest in a stepstool if you don’t already have one.

Use Windows

Windows can take a great deal of space when you’ve only got so much space to work with. They can strictly determine where you’re able to put furniture unless you’re willing to part with some of the natural sunlight entering your apartment. There is a wide range of shelving that can go in front of a window. It can be used either anchored to the wall or suctioned to the window to display plants or memorabilia.

Tiny Living Advice

While your apartment is probably not as small as a “tiny home,” there are tips to be taken from their way of living. Using every space available such as a pantry that pulls out from the crack between the wall and the refrigerator or using a magnetic strip on the backsplash to house knives and other utensils. There are a number of space-saving tricks to be taken from tiny-house living.
