When renting an apartment, there are always those few things that we need to find the perfect one: distance from work, how many rooms and bathrooms, accessibility. How often is safety inside your new apartment a concern? Fire safety is thought to be standard practice for renters, but it is always critical for you to check your new apartment for potential risks as well.

Kitchen Equipment

Kitchens are the most common room in a home for a fire to start, simply because of the nature of the room. Unattended food, towels, oven mitts, and grease splatter are common firestarters. Sometimes the culprit is faulty or not correctly cleaned equipment. It is essential to inspect your appliances and ask your landlords how often it is inspected.

Light Bulbs

The wrong size or wattage light bulb cause be a significant fire starter. Bulbs that are too large cause generate too much heat, possibly explode and cause a fire. If a bulb burns out, be sure to tell your landlord- reach out to get the correct information, although purchasing the bulb will be the tenant’s responsibility.

Children

Young children can cause fires by simply being unsure of dangers. Children can be attracted to the unfamiliarity of fire- how hot it is and what it can do. Never leave children unsupervised and educate them about the dangers of fires and what causes them.

Clothes Dryer

While the convenience factor is hard to ignore, having a washer and a dryer in your apartment does require attention. Be sure to constantly empty the lint trap before and after use because it is a common cause of home fires. A clogged dryer hose can also lead to a home fire, so check it regularly or have your landlord inspect it.

Outdated Wiring

Old wiring might not be visible, but it is always important to remember. Typically, old wiring cannot keep up with modern electronics, leading to a fire. A frequently blow a fuse is an indicator of old wiring. Contact your landlord or management office and let them know- electrical fires account for many home fires.
