4 Tips for Apartment Living: A Guide to Neighborly Etiquette

Living in an apartment can be exciting.

Living in an apartment can be exciting. After all, for many first-time renters, it is their first taste of having their own home outside of the place where they grew up under their parents’ roof. Over time, though, the fun might wear off because of living with roommates, spouses, or in-laws; simultaneously, your experience can be spoiled by rude or inconsiderate neighbors. Here is a quick guide on how to be a nice neighbor. Following these etiquette tips is easier than you might think!

Try to Lower the Volume

Although it may not seem like it at first, the walls of many apartment buildings are incredibly thin. They are sturdy enough to hold the structure together, of course, but sound travels through them much too easily. Laughing, watching movies, listening to music, or even having a loud argument can reach your neighbors, so be mindful of that. Also, this advice becomes even more important for the late-night hours and those in the early morning hours – when everyone is settling into bed or are still sleeping.

Pay Attention to Your Dog

Dogs of all kinds are cute companions. However, many complexes have restrictions on the breeds you can bring into your community. This is mainly because certain breeds are considered to be more “aggressive” than others. However, even small dogs can be seen as a problem – especially if they are overly energetic and bark at other people and dogs as they stroll on by a backyard or front window. Your dog howling or barking all the time is a violation of common courtesy and neighborly etiquette at the same time.

Be Careful in the Parking Lot

Getting out of the parking lot is, compared to other driving tasks, probably mundane and not much of a challenge. That said, do your best to be careful while trying to get in or out of your spot. Drive slowly and carefully so that you don’t bump into other cars, or accidentally hit anyone who is trying to take out the trash or chase down a stray ball. Also, while not all apartment complexes have assigned parking spots – if yours does, then make sure to respect it and make sure that your guests do as well.

Turn Your Stereo Down

Yes, we know we mentioned turning the music down – whether you want to have the sound at full blast while taking a shower or getting those pesky chores done. All the same, you should turn your music down when you reenter your neighborhood while in your car.
